Valentine’s Day

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009
A guest post from Artful Home Online Merchant Barbara Fitzsimmons

Ah, yes…the holiday that you LOVE if you have a sweetheart to share it with & the holiday you love to HATE if you’re spending it alone.

This year, don’t make Valentine’s Day about your romantic status…make it about showing those you love that they’re special (your mom & dad, your kids, your best friend, your dog, your pizza delivery guy …you get the idea).

But how to show your sentiments? Now don’t get me wrong, I would never refuse a gift of chocolates or flowers on Valentine’s Day (or any other day)…but talk about predictable! Why not show the love in a creative way while supporting North American Artists at the same time?

Try these ideas:

Make your own custom made perfume & present it in one of our beautiful art glass perfume bottles. Eloise Cotton’s “Love & Kisses Perfume Bottle” is a perfect way to show your affection.

Mark Orr’s “Raven on a Heart” is whimsical, fun & can be displayed nearly anywhere to remind your loved one how you feel.

The red “Bark Shawl” will keep your amour warm & cozy on cold & dreary winter days still to come.

For the animal lover in your life, Jill Mayberg’s print “The Dog I Love” is a precious tribute to pooches.

Finally, if you’re really set on finding yourself a sweetie, enlist the help of Dawn Estrin’s “Voodoo Valentine” brooch. It couldn’t hurt.

However you decide to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, do it (He)artfully!

Committed to Variety

Horse Eye by John Maggiotto

Horse Eye Giclée Print by John Maggiotto

Is your taste in art is as eclectic as your taste in music? I’m drawn to Prince, Billie Holiday, Kanye West and Pavarotti; Jan Van Eyck, Karen Heyl, Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Kehinde Wiley, John Maggiotto and Oren Sherman. I suppose the substance that threads my favored artists together is passion, the “soul” that emanates from their work. Consider these artists’ voices and music and artwork. Is there anything like the fine detail of a Van Eyck painting, a Prince guitar riff, or a Pavarotti aria? Prince is not afraid to be in his own skin – to lay down his fingerprint. Pavarotti and Van Eyck seemed to like sharing what compelled them, and the result was brilliant. I have a passion for passion. I’m not committed to one particular genre or medium, I am committed to variety, to experiencing and marveling at what each era and category of artists has to offer. Variety is the spice of life, right?

Fused and Slumped Glass

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

A guest post from Artful Home CEO Lisa Bayne

It’s fun being the glass merchant, because you never know what your artists are going to come up with. Take, for example, this shape below by Ed Edwards. When I first saw it, all I could think of was a stingray! Silly? Yeah, probably, but between the green color that reminded me of the ocean and the curvature of the sides, that’s what immediately came to mind.

The truth is that Ed calls this a Stepping Stone, as he does all of his fused and slumped pieces with circles of color. What does that mean? Well, first he takes a clear sheet of glass and then puts a colored sheet of glass over it. Then he stacks precut circles of colored glass, 2 –3 colors high on top of that. He carefully puts this precariously stacked glass into the kiln and melts it all together. That’s where the term “fused” comes from.

After it comes out of the kiln, he lets it cool down before placing the fused flat piece of glass over a mold. He puts that back into the kiln and reheats the glass until it drapes itself over the mold, forming that shape that reminds me of the stingray! This process is called slumping.

The sizes, shapes & color combos that he can create are limitless! Check them out on his web page!

How the art fits into our lives

Ornaments on a tree

Every year Artful Home brings together a beautiful collection of artist-made ornaments. Most of these ornaments are blown glass But sometimes there are neat little treats made out of other materials – like Sitting Dog and Sitting Cat by Debra Parker Kuhns and Karl Kuhns which are made of porcelain. I get to see each of these wonderful creations as an individual ornament, ready to be sent off to its new home. I seldom get to see where these precious ornaments end up.

Red Storm by Thomas Kelly

Imagine our delight when April W. purchased ornaments this year and sent us pictures of those ornaments displayed on her Christmas tree. We oohed and aahed over her pictures – those precious works of art displayed for guests to see. Her use of artist-made ornaments mixed in with other ornaments on her tree is a perfect example of an Artful Life.
